Why come here
Fethiye is the western anchor of Lycia — the modern town built on top of ancient Telmessos, the Lycian rock tombs cut into the cliffs above it, the busiest natural harbour on the coast (with the wooden gulet quay tradition), and within 25 minutes of Ölüdeniz, the world’s most-flown commercial paragliding site. If you have a week and want to do everything Lycia is famous for from one base, this is it.
The pairing matters: Fethiye for harbour life, market food, the Roman theatre and the Tomb of Amyntas (an enormous Hellenistic temple-tomb cut into the rock); Ölüdeniz, 18 km south, for the Blue Lagoon, Belceğiz Beach (where paraglider tandems land), and the Lycian Way trailhead. Most travellers split nights between the two.
Hisarönü, midway between, is where most British package-tour hotels are concentrated — budget hotels and bar nightlife, 10 minutes by dolmuş (shared minibus) from Ölüdeniz beach. It’s the cheapest base but trades atmosphere for proximity.

Paragliding from Babadağ (1,957 m)
Tandem flights take off from one of three launch heights on Babadağ mountain and land on Belceğiz Beach 25–40 minutes later. Standard flights are $100–130 USD; long flights from the upper launch $130–170; acrobatic flights $150–200. Includes hotel pickup, cable car, gear and pilot.
The Oludeniz Air Games festival (third week of October) brings 1,000+ pilots from 60 countries for five days of acrobatic shows, base jumping and night flying. Accommodation in Oludeniz doubles for that week — book early.

The 540-km Lycian Way begins at Ölüdeniz and runs east along the coast to Geyikbayırı near Antalya. Day-hike options from Fethiye / Ölüdeniz include the Faralya village walk (Lycian Way Stage 2, 12 km, dramatic clifftops above Butterfly Valley), the descent to Butterfly Valley itself (steep but spectacular), and the easier Belceğiz–Kıdrak coastal path.

Fethiye isn’t the diving capital of the coast (that’s Kaş, 3 hours east), but a handful of operators run day trips out of Ölüdeniz to nearby reefs and coves. Visibility is decent (15–25 m). For serious diving, base in Kaş or do a 3–4 day diving add-on at the end of a Fethiye trip.

Getting there
Dalaman Airport (DLM) is 60 km west — about 1 hour by transfer. Multiple direct flights from London, Manchester, Berlin, Amsterdam and other European cities in season (April–October); fewer in winter (connect via Istanbul). Options from the airport:
- Shuttle bus (€10–15, 60–90 min) — pre-book online for guaranteed seat
- Private transfer (€40–60, 1 h) — door to door, best for groups (price per car not per person)
- Rental car (€25–50/day) — useful if also visiting Saklıkent Gorge, Patara, Kaş
- Public bus (€3–5) — cheapest but takes 2+ hours via Fethiye otogar
Getting around
Dolmuş (shared minibus) runs every 15–20 minutes between Fethiye otogar, Hisarönü and Ölüdeniz from early morning to ~midnight in season. About 25 TRY per ride. Taxis are easy to find but more expensive than dolmuş. Rental cars are useful for day trips to Saklıkent Gorge (1 h), Tlos ruins (45 min), or Patara beach (1 h 15 min).
Money
Most operators quote in USD, especially for paragliding. ATMs are everywhere in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz; smaller villages may want cash. Hotels and restaurants take cards. Cash is sometimes 3–5% cheaper for paragliding bookings on the day.
The view from here — nearby attractions
- Butterfly Valley: reached by boat (15 min from Ölüdeniz) or by a steep, infamous climb down from Faralya. Camp on the beach, swim in the closed bay, hike up the valley to the waterfall.
- Saklıkent Gorge: 60 km east, a 300m-deep limestone canyon you can wade through in summer. Tour buses run from Fethiye, or rent a car. Combine with Tlos (Lycian ruins).
- Patara Beach: 80 km southeast, the longest sand beach in Turkey (18 km), with the ancient Lycian capital’s ruins inland. Sea-turtle nesting site — sun-loungers banned in nesting season.
- Tlos: Lycian rock-tomb city set on a cliff, 45 km east. Less visited than Fethiye’s tombs.
- Kayaköy: abandoned Greek village 8 km from Fethiye, evacuated in the 1923 population exchange. Eerily preserved hillside of stone houses.

Is Fethiye walkable?
The old town and harbour are walkable. Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü are also walkable within themselves but you’ll need a dolmuş or taxi between them. For day trips beyond, rent a car or take an organised tour.
Can I avoid the Air Games festival crowds?
Yes — either stay in Fethiye town (busy but not festival-busy) or visit before mid-October or after the third week. Babadag still flies, the Lycian Way is still walkable, and accommodation prices return to normal.
Is paragliding safe for non-flyers?
Tandem paragliding has a strong overall safety record — about 250,000 flights per year at Babadag with very few incidents per year. Always check the operator’s licensing (T2 tandem rating issued by THK) and insurance. See the Oludeniz Air Games operator directory for verified operators.
How long should I stay?
Three nights minimum for paragliding plus one full day in Fethiye. Five to seven nights if you want to add Lycian Way day-hikes, Saklıkent and Patara. Two weeks if combining with Kaş or a Blue Cruise.
