Fethiye is the practical, do-everything base — a real working town wrapped around a big yacht harbour, with a buzzing market, a long waterfront and the rock tombs of ancient Telmessos cut into the cliff above it. Most beach holidaymakers actually stay 15 minutes away in Ölüdeniz, home to the famous Blue Lagoon: a crescent of sand and impossibly blue shallow water, backed by the 1,960-metre Babadağ from which tandem paragliders launch all day. It is the busiest, liveliest, most developed corner of the Lycian coast, and that is exactly the point.
The vibe: energetic and varied, from the everyday Turkish bustle of Fethiye's market to the full-on resort strip at Ölüdeniz. There is always something on.
Who it suits: first-timers who want a bit of everything, families with younger children, and anyone who would rather have too much to do than too little.
What to do: swim and sunbathe at Ölüdeniz, paraglide off Babadağ, take the 12 Islands boat trip from Fethiye harbour, ride the Babadağ cable car, cool off at Saklıkent Gorge, wander the rock tombs, and use the town as a springboard for Lycian Way day walks. There is more here than a week can hold.
Where it falls short: peace and seclusion. In July and August Ölüdeniz is packed, the strip is loud, and it can feel more package-resort than authentic Turkey. If you came to escape crowds, this is not your base.
Stay cost: the cheapest and broadest of the three — everything from budget self-catering apartments to mid-range family hotels. Drive from Dalaman: about an hour, the shortest of the three.
Kaş: divers, paddlers and free spirits
Kaş is the coast's most quietly charismatic town. There is no big beach here — and that, perversely, is its strength. Without sand to draw the package crowds, Kaş has kept its character: tumbling bougainvillea-draped lanes, a pretty square, antique sarcophagi standing in the middle of the streets, and a working harbour that fills with dive boats and sea kayaks rather than mega-yachts. It is the diving capital of the Turkish Mediterranean and the spiritual home of Turkish sea-kayaking, with the sunken city of Kekova an easy day trip away.
The vibe: bohemian, independent, a little arty — the most atmospheric and least packaged of the three, with a relaxed evening buzz in the bars and meyhanes rather than club nightlife.
Who it suits: divers, snorkellers and sea-kayakers; independent travellers who value character over facilities; and couples who want somewhere lively and characterful but not flashy.
What to do: dive the walls, reefs and wrecks; kayak over the sunken city at Kekova; swim off the platforms and the small Küçük Çakıl beach; visit the ancient theatre at sunset; potter the shops and lanes; and take boat trips out to the islands and the Blue Cave.
Where it falls short: there is no proper sandy beach, so a family expecting bucket-and-spade days will be disappointed, and the swim-platform-and-ladder setup suits adults far more than toddlers. It is also the furthest of the three from the airport.
Stay cost: mid-range — characterful small hotels and pensions, with fewer big resorts and fewer rock-bottom bargains than Fethiye. Drive from Dalaman: about two and a half to three hours.
Kalkan: couples, food and the quiet life
Kalkan is the coast's upscale escape. The old town spills steeply down a hillside to a small harbour, its whitewashed, bougainvillea-hung houses now mostly boutique hotels and restaurants. Above and behind it sprawl the villas — hundreds of them, almost all with private infinity pools angled at the sunset over Kalkan Bay. Kalkan does two things superbly: villa holidays and dinner. Its rooftop restaurants are the best concentration of fine dining on the Lycian coast, and the sunset views from them are the stuff of postcards.
The vibe: smart, calm and grown-up. Romantic rather than rowdy — there is essentially no nightlife, by design, and that is precisely what its regulars come back for.
Who it suits: couples, honeymooners, foodies, and groups renting a villa with a pool who want comfort, privacy and great dinners over a buzzy beach scene.
What to do: eat — long, late, rooftop dinners are the main event — plus laze by your pool, swim from the beach clubs built over the water, take the short trip to Kaputaş beach, and day-trip to Kekova, Patara or Saklıkent. It is a base for slowing down, not for ticking off activities.
Where it falls short: it is steep (a lot of steps), it has no beach of its own, and it is the priciest and quietest of the three. Anyone wanting nightlife, a sandy shore on the doorstep, or a budget trip should look elsewhere.
Stay cost: the highest of the three, skewed firmly towards upscale villas and boutique hotels. Drive from Dalaman: about an hour and a half to two hours.

Why not have two? The classic combo
You do not have to choose, and many people shouldn't. The classic Lycian week is a two-base trip splitting Fethiye and Kaş: a few days around Fethiye and Ölüdeniz for the beaches, the boat trips and the paragliding, then two and a half hours down a spectacular coast road to Kaş for the diving, Kekova and a slower, more characterful second half.
