Hadrian's Gate
Roman triumphal arch from 130 AD, the historic entrance to the old town. The most photographed monument in Antalya. Free, always open, in the centre of the eastern wall.
The old harbour
Roman + Byzantine harbour, now a yacht marina ringed by restaurants. Best for evening drinks. Daily boat trips depart from here for swim cruises along the cliffs to Düden Waterfall.
Yivli Minaret
13th-century fluted minaret — the architectural symbol of Antalya. Adjacent mosque is open for visitors outside prayer times.
Antalya Museum
One of Turkey’s top archaeology museums. Lycian sarcophagi, Pamphylian sculpture, Roman mosaics. 15-min walk west of the old town. €5 entry. Allow 2 hours.
Karaalioğlu Park
Cliff-top park on the southern edge of the old town. Sunset views west towards the Beydağları mountains. Free.
Düden Waterfalls
Lower Düden plunges off the cliff into the Mediterranean east of the city; Upper Düden is a forest waterfall north of the centre. Both worth a half-day, especially in summer.

Eating in Kaleiçi
Avoid the harbour-ring restaurants with English-language menus and tout-driven tables — they’re fine but priced for the cruise market. Better: walk one block back from the harbour into the alleys. Vanilla (international comfort food, garden), Seraser (Ottoman fine dining), and 7 Mehmet (city institution, Turkish kebab, located in the upper part of town not strictly Kaleiçi but worth the cab) all rate well. Locals tend to eat in the new town north of Atatürk Caddesi where the food courts and Anatolian-cuisine spots are; cabs are cheap.
Breakfast: Turkish kahvaltı spreads in Kaleiçi pensions are usually included. For a serious local breakfast, take a cab to Konyaaltı beach district where the Sunday-morning kahvaltı culture peaks.
Three days in Kaleiçi — a sample plan
The shape that works for most Lycia-bound visitors:
- Day 1 — arrive + walk the old town. Pre-booked airport transfer to the pension (20 min, €20–35). Drop bags, walk the loop: Hadrian’s Gate, Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque, harbour, Karaalioğlu Park sunset. Dinner at Vanilla or Seraser. Reset jet-lag on a harbour-side terrace.
- Day 2 — Olympos + Mt Chimaera. Pre-booked transfer or rental; 1h30 each way. Walk Olympos ruins in the morning, swim at the river-mouth beach, lunch in Çıralı, climb to the eternal flames at dusk. Long but iconic. Back to Kaleiçi by 9pm.
- Day 3 — Antalya Museum + Termessos. Museum first (open from 9am, allow 2 hours, walking distance from Kaleiçi). Lunch in town. Then 45-min drive to Termessos for the afternoon climb to the mountain ruins. Evening flight or onward to Kaş.
Add a Day 4 if you want Phaselis (combine with a beach morning) or a 5th if you want Myra + Kekova (full-day, separate trip). After 3–5 nights, the natural move is west — towards Kaş, Kalkan, and the Lycian core.
Logistics
Airport transfer
Antalya Airport (AYT) → Kaleiçi: 20 min, ~€20–35 pre-booked. Walk-up taxi: €30–50. Tram (line AntRay) is also possible — €1.50 each way, 45 min — but inconvenient with luggage.
Driving in
Kaleiçi has narrow streets and limited parking. If renting a car for day trips, ask the hotel about overnight parking before you arrive. Most boutique hotels arrange €10/night street or garage parking.
Walking the old town
1 km wide, no through-traffic. The full pedestrian loop from Hadrian's Gate to the harbour to Karaalioğlu is 30 minutes at a slow pace.
When to visit
April–June and September–October are perfect — warm but not stifling. July–August is hot (35°C+) but lively. November–March is mild, quiet, and rainy at times — fine if you don’t need beach weather.
Is Antalya part of Lycia?
Geographically, Antalya sits on the eastern edge of the historical Lycian region — it was the capital of the neighbouring Pamphylian kingdom in antiquity. The Lycian kingdom proper covered the coast from roughly Antalya west to Fethiye and Dalaman.
So Antalya itself is Pamphylian, but it’s the most practical eastern gateway to Lycia. The closest airport for Olympos, Mt Chimaera, Myra, and the Lycian Way’s eastern stages — and a much larger flight network than Dalaman, with year-round daily service from London, Manchester, Istanbul, and major European hubs.
