Antalya vs Fethiye. City vs port town. Eastern vs western Lycia. Year-round airport vs seasonal. The honest comparison for picking a Lycia base.

Both work as Lycia bases — they just cover different halves of the region. Antalya is a city of 1.6 million on the east, with year-round flights and access to Olympos, Mt Chimaera, Myra, Termessos. Fethiye is a small port town in the west, gateway to Ölüdeniz, Patara, Kaş, Kalkan, and the famous Lycian Way western sections. The smartest 7–10 day trip uses both: fly in to one, drive west, fly out of the other.

Honest pick

Don’t pick one — sequence them. Fly into Antalya (more flight options), spend 3 nights there, then drive the D400 west, sleeping in Kaş or Kalkan halfway, ending in Fethiye for 3 nights. Fly out of Dalaman. You see the whole of Lycia in 7–10 days. If you must pick one: Fethiye for beaches + the Lycian Way, Antalya for city + cultural day trips + year-round flights.

The cost gap between the two is small (€10–20/day). The vibe gap is large: Antalya is urban + cultural, Fethiye is small-town + outdoorsy. Pick the vibe that matches your trip.

When Antalya wins

Pick Antalya if…

  • You’re flying year-round from London, Manchester, or Istanbul (more daily options)
  • You like real cities — restaurants, museums, nightlife, walking around
  • The ancient sites you want to see are mostly eastern Lycia (Olympos, Myra, Kekova, Termessos)
  • You’re ending or restarting the Lycian Way at Olympos (Stage 17–18)
  • You want a 5-star resort experience in Lara as part of the trip
  • You’re travelling November–March (Antalya stays alive year-round; Fethiye gets quiet)

Pick Fethiye if…

  • The beaches matter (Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, Patara — all near Fethiye)
  • You’re sailing — most blue cruise gulets depart Fethiye or Göcek
  • You’re paragliding off Babadağ at Ölüdeniz (the world-class spot)
  • You’re hiking the Lycian Way from Stage 1 (Ovacık trailhead)
  • You want a slower, smaller-town pace
  • You want easy onward access to Kaş, Kalkan, Patara (the western Lycian core)

The 10-day combined sequence

The way most thoughtful Lycia trips actually run:

  1. Days 1–3 — Antalya / Kaleiçi. Fly into AYT (year-round, easy connections). Old-town pension. Day trips: Olympos + Mt Chimaera, Termessos.
  2. Day 4 — drive west. D400 from Antalya past Olympos, Demre, Myra. Sleep in Kaş or Kalkan.
  3. Days 5–6 — Kaş / Kalkan. Boat trip to Kekova sunken city. Coastal swims at Kaputaş. Day walks on the Lycian Way (Patara to Kalkan, 12 km).
  4. Day 7 — drive west again. D400 past Patara, Xanthos, Letoon. Sleep in Patara village or continue to Fethiye.
  5. Days 8–10 — Fethiye / Ölüdeniz. Beach day at Ölüdeniz. Paraglide off Babadağ. Boat day from Fethiye to the islands.
  6. Day 10 — fly out. Dalaman Airport, 1 hour from Fethiye.

This sequence works east-to-west or west-to-east; both are good. East-to-west gives you the bigger flight options arriving (Antalya), while west-to-east gives you a cheaper exit through Dalaman’s seasonal charter network if your trip falls in peak season.

Logistics: the in-between drive

The D400 between Antalya and Fethiye runs 220 km, ~3h30. Don’t do it in a single day — break it into pieces. Antalya → Kaş is 3h direct; Antalya → Kalkan adds 30 min. Fethiye → Kaş is 1h45. The full coastal D400 from Antalya to Fethiye is one of the most scenic drives in the eastern Mediterranean — pine-forest mountains plunging into clear water, with Lycian ruins emerging at the side of the road every 20 km.

Rental car: pick up at the arrival airport, drop at the departure airport (€20–40 one-way fee, much less hassle than a same-airport return). Most major chains (Hertz, Sixt, Avis) handle one-ways between Antalya and Dalaman.
