The simplest test: do you want to walk to dinner from your hotel, eat at a different bar each night, and meet other travellers? Kaş. Do you want to stay in your villa, swim in your pool, drive down to the harbour for one or two restaurants over the week? Kalkan. Both are valid trips; the wrong choice is uncomfortable for a week.

When Kaş wins
You want to walk to dinner
Kaş town centre is genuinely walkable — the harbour, Antiphellos theatre, restaurants, bars are all 5–15 minutes’ walk from any pension. You don’t need a car or taxi. Kalkan’s restaurants are concentrated in a narrow harbour strip; if you stay in a hilltop villa (which is most Kalkan accommodation), getting to dinner means a 10-minute taxi or a steep walk down + uphill back.
You're diving (or learning to dive)
Kaş has 25–40m visibility, 8–10 dive centres, and the cheapest PADI Open Water course on the Mediterranean (£350–450 for 4 days). Many travellers come to Kaş specifically to certify. Kalkan’s dive scene is much smaller. See our diving guide.

Kalkan is built around villa rentals — hundreds of properties on the hilltops, most with private pools, sea views, parking. Kaş has very few villa-with-pool options. If your trip-shape is "rent a villa, cook half the meals, swim in our own pool", Kalkan is built for that.
You're a young family
Self-catering villa with private pool + predictable British-tourist-economy infrastructure (kids’ menus, English-speaking pharmacies, British-style supermarkets) makes Kalkan low-friction for parents of 4–10 year-olds.
You want quieter evenings
Kalkan is genuinely quiet. After 11pm the harbour empties, hilltop villas have only crickets. Kaş is quiet by international standards but louder than Kalkan; bars open till 1am.
You're closer to Patara

The Kaputaş Beach problem
Kaputaş is the photo-beach between Kaş and Kalkan — a tiny turquoise cove at the bottom of a 200-step descent. It’s on the road equidistant from both towns (~14–16 km). Half-day excursion either way. The beach itself is small (200 m) and gets crowded by 11am in summer; arrive early or stay late, or take a Kaş-harbour boat that drops you for 2 hours mid-afternoon.
The split-base option
For 7+ night stays, splitting between Kaş and Kalkan is genuinely worth it. 4 nights Kaş for diving + harbour atmosphere, 3 nights Kalkan villa for slow days + private pool. Or vice-versa. Inter-town transfer is 30 min and €25–40 by taxi; even cheaper if you pre-book a 30-min one-way transfer. Two bases, two trip-shapes, no commute fatigue.
