Visit early-to-mid October if you want beach + warm sea. Late October still works for hiking and cultural travel but the sea cools and the first rains arrive. Either way you'll save 40–60% on hotels compared to July–August, the trail is empty, and Cappadocia is in its photographic peak.
If you can only pick one week of October, choose the second week. Crowds have dropped post-school-holidays, sea is still 25°C, the air is dry, and the harvest is in full swing in the villages.

Best trips for October
Lycian coast week (best fit)
Fly into Dalaman. 3 nights Fethiye / Ölüdeniz — paraglide, swim, 12-Islands boat day. Drive to Kaş or Kalkan, 3 nights — boat trip to Kekova sunken city, Kaputaş Beach, Lycian Way day walk Patara→Kalkan. Optional extension to Olympos / Çıralı. Total ~7 days, ~€800–1200 per couple inc. flights from London. See our 10-day Lycia itinerary.
Lycian Way trek (perfect month)
October is the best month to walk the trail. Daytime 22°C, no scorching afternoons, water sources still flowing from spring rains, pensions still operating, mosquitoes gone. Most through-hikers do the western half (Stage 1–8, ~10 days, Fethiye to Patara). See Lycian Way guide + day-walk picks.
Antalya + Cappadocia combo
Fly Antalya, 3 nights for Lycia day trips (Olympos, Termessos, Phaselis, Myra). Fly internally to Kayseri or Nevşehir for Cappadocia, 3 nights — hot-air balloon, hiking the Rose Valley, Göreme open-air museum. The autumn colours in Cappadocia peak mid-to-late October — postcard-perfect for the balloon photos.
Istanbul long weekend
Istanbul in October is unbeatable: 18°C, golden light, no humidity, fewer cruise-ship crowds. 3–4 nights. Wear layers — mornings cool, afternoons warm, evenings need a sweater. Pair with a short Cappadocia extension if you've come this far.
What to pack
- Coast (Fethiye, Kaş, Antalya): Shorts + T-shirts for day, light long pants for evening. One fleece or merino layer (evenings can be 15°C). Light rain shell. Swimwear + reef shoes (Turkish beaches mostly pebble). Sunglasses, SPF 30. Hiking shoes if Lycian Way on the plan.
- Cities (Istanbul, Antalya): Layers — base + warm middle + light shell. Comfortable walking shoes.
- Cappadocia: Warm fleece + jacket for pre-dawn balloon (it's cold at altitude). Light gloves + beanie. Hiking shoes for valley trails.
- Universal: €100–200 in cash to start (ATMs are everywhere but small vendors prefer cash). Power adapter (Turkey uses Type C/F European plugs).

Things to know
- Sunset is early-ish. By late October, sunset is 6:00pm. Plan beach time + sights for earlier in the day.
- Daylight Saving change. Turkey doesn't change clocks. If you're coming from Europe and Europe falls back end of October, the time-zone gap closes by an hour.
- Olive harvest. Mid-October to mid-November. Village backroads in Lycia are dotted with families spreading nets under olive trees. Bring an empty water bottle and stop at any village press — fresh-pressed olive oil is unforgettable.
- Pomegranate season. Roadside vendors press fresh juice into cups for ₺20–30. Mid-October peak.
