Lycian Way day walks. 10 standalone single-day sections you can walk without committing to the 30-day through-hike. Most end at swimming water.

Most foreign visitors don’t walk the full 540 km. They walk one or two stages as day-trips from a Fethiye / Kalkan / Kaş base. Below: the 10 stages that work best as day walks — short transport-friendly hops, scenic, ending at villages with food and onward dolmuş. Stage maps and live trail conditions on lycianway.co.uk.

Short answer

Pick Faralya → Kabak as your first one. Dolmuş from Fethiye in the morning, walk down the cliff path, swim at Kabak beach, dolmuş back. 4–5 hours of walking, free, no permit, no guide, no booking.

If you only walk one Lycian Way stage, walk this one. After that: Patara to Kalkan if you want easy + cultural, Olympos to Adrasan if you want coast-and-pine, Üçağız to Aperlae if you want sea-level Lycian ruins, Çıralı to Mt Chimaera if you want night drama. Each ends within 30 minutes of dolmuş back to base. Below in detail.

The 10 best Lycian Way day walks

1. Faralya → Kabak (Stage 2 — the most-walked day)

10 km · 4–5 hrs · easy-moderate · 90% downhill · ends at swimming water

Cliff path through pine forest from Faralya village (cliff-top, 300m above sea) descending to Kabak Valley (sea level). Open views of Butterfly Valley most of the route. End at Kabak Beach with a beach café and 6–8 eco-camps for lunch. Dolmuş back to Fethiye every 1–2 hours.

Get there: Fethiye otogar → Faralya dolmuş, ~1 hour, ₺50–80. Lunch: Kabak Valley eco-camp lunch ~€10–15. Get back: Kabak junction → Fethiye dolmuş, ~1 hour. Best month: May, September.

2. Patara → Kalkan (Stage 6)

16 km · 5–6 hrs · moderate · ends at restaurants

Starts at the Patara archaeological site (visit before walking — the bouleuterion + lighthouse + 12 km beach). Trail climbs out of Patara dunes through pine, traverses the upper ridge, descends to Kalkan harbour. Cultural opener (Patara) + scenic middle + restaurant finish. Pair with overnight in Patara village the night before.

Get there: Kaş otogar → Patara dolmuş ~£2; or Fethiye → Patara junction inter-city bus £6–8. Lunch: trail-side picnic from Patara village shop. Get back: Kalkan → Kaş dolmuş ~£2. Best month: April, October.

3. Üçağız → Aperlae (Stage 10 loop variant)

14 km out-and-back · 5 hrs · easy · sea-level Lycian ruins

From Üçağız fishing village, walk west along the coast to the half-submerged Lycian site of Aperlae. The route hugs the sea, passes 4–5 small bays, ancient sarcophagi half in the water. Aperlae itself sits on a hillside above a flooded Roman harbour you can swim in — 4th-century quay walls under your feet at 1.5m depth. Walk back the same path or arrange a kayak pickup from Üçağız to shorten the return.

Get there: Kaş → Üçağız dolmuş, ~1 hour, £2.50. Lunch: picnic from Üçağız harbour shops; restaurants only at Üçağız. Get back: Üçağız → Kaş dolmuş. Best month: May, June, September, October.

4. Çıralı → Mt Chimaera evening (Stage 18 partial)

8 km round-trip · 3 hrs · easy · evening mood

Walk from Çıralı village up to the eternal flames at Mt Chimaera (Yanartaş). The Lycian Way Stage 18 trail passes the trailhead. Best done as an evening walk: leave Çıralı at 5pm, reach the flames at sunset, sit with them for 90 minutes, descend with head-torches. Many Olympos hostels include an organised van version of this walk.

Get there: Antalya → Çıralı dolmuş via Olympos junction. Cost: ₺120 entry to the flames + dolmuş £1.50. Get back: walk back to Çıralı by torch. Best month: April–November (closes after dark in winter).

5. Olympos → Adrasan (Stage 17 — coast-and-pine)

13 km · 6 hrs · moderate-hard · 700m climb · spectacular coast

One of the most photogenic stages — walks high above the Olympos coast through pine forest to Adrasan. Climb out of Olympos village 700m, cross a saddle with sea views, descend to Adrasan beach. Adrasan has multiple pensions and seafood restaurants. End-of-day swim at Adrasan beach. The stage is not for low-fitness walkers — the climb is sustained.

Get there: already in Olympos (you stayed overnight). Lunch: trail picnic from Olympos shops; nothing en-route. Get back: Adrasan → Olympos junction dolmuş, then dolmuş to Olympos village. Best month: May, September, October.

6. Ovacık → Faralya (Stage 1, recommended starting point)

17 km · 6–7 hrs · moderate · scenic descent

Skip the official Stage 0 from Hisarönü; start at Ovacık. The route climbs the Babadağ ridge with views across Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon, traverses the upper plateau, descends into Faralya village. End at a Faralya cliff-top pension for lunch + sunset views over Butterfly Valley. Pair with the next day’s Faralya → Kabak descent.

Get there: Fethiye → Ovacık dolmuş, ~30 min, £1. Lunch: trail picnic. Stay/return: overnight in Faralya pensions (€40–80 with dinner) and walk Stage 2 next day, OR dolmuş back to Fethiye. Best month: April, May, October.

7. Kaş → Limanağzı → Boğazcık (Stage 8 partial)

16 km · 5–6 hrs · easy-moderate · sea views the whole way

Walk south-east from Kaş along the peninsula coastline. Passes Limanağzı bay (boats from Kaş drop swimmers here), climbs to a small mountain village (Boğazcık), descends to coastal pine forest. Less famous than the Faralya stages but quieter, with constant sea views. Boats also run to Limanağzı if you want to walk one direction and return by sea.

Get there: already in Kaş. Lunch: Limanağzı bay café (€8–12 for fish + salad). Get back: Boğazcık → Kaş dolmuş, infrequent — check at Kaş otogar. Or: walk to Limanağzı, take Limanağzı boat back to Kaş harbour. Best month: April–November.

8. Kabak → Aşağı Sıdyma (Stage 3 — quiet inland)

22 km · 8–9 hrs · hard · for fitter walkers

Inland from Kabak Valley through old Lycian villages. Less visited than the coast. Multiple Lycian sites along the route (Sıdyma is a small but atmospheric ancient city). Best as a long day-walk for fitter trekkers OR as a half-stage with overnight in a tea-house in the middle. Limited shade; carry 5L water.

Get there: Kabak base. Lunch: trail picnic. Get back: Aşağı Sıdyma → Eşen junction → Fethiye otogar (3 dolmuş hops). Best month: April, May, October.

9. Demre → Andriake → Sura (Stage 12 short)

9 km · 3 hrs · easy · ruin-dense

Short ruin-walking day from Myra/Demre. Walk from the Myra archaeological site to the Andriake harbour ruins (Roman granary still standing) and on to the smaller Sura site. Three Lycian sites in 9 km. Pairs naturally with a Myra + St Nicholas Church morning.

Get there: Demre town (Kaş → Demre dolmuş, ~1 hour, £2.50). Lunch: Andriake harbour fish lokantas (€10–15). Get back: walk back to Demre or dolmuş from Andriake. Best month: all year (low-altitude, lower-temp).

10. Tahtalı saddle (Stage 19/20 high-altitude option)

14 km · 7 hrs · very hard · 1,500m altitude · only for experienced walkers

The Tahtalı massif (2,365 m, the ancient Mt Olympos) towers above the eastern coast. The Lycian Way passes its base; a side-trail summit attempt is a serious mountain day. Most foreign trekkers don’t do this without a guide. The cable car from Tekirova is the easier option for the summit (€25 return). Listed here for completeness; the day-walk version of "the Tahtalı section" is usually a high-shoulder traverse, not the summit.

Get there: Tekirova (cable-car town) or Beycik village. Cost: guide €100–150/day strongly recommended. Best month: June–September only — snow-bound winter.

Day-walk planning checklist

Start time

9am at the trailhead, even in shoulder season. May/October sunset is 7pm; finishing earlier gives time for dolmuş back. Summer: start 7am to avoid midday heat.

Water

3 L minimum spring/autumn; 5 L summer. No exceptions. Spring water from village fountains is fine; carry electrolyte tabs for the longer stages.

Footwear

Trail runners. See the full packing list for the why and the brand recommendations.

Backup plan

Save the previous-village pension number on WhatsApp before you start. If you misjudge timing, you can call from the trail (signal is patchy but available on most stages) and walk back to known accommodation.

Frequently asked

Can I walk the Lycian Way as day-trips without doing the whole thing?

Yes — most foreign visitors do exactly that. The trail is divided into 29 stages of 8–25 km each, and roughly 12 of those work as standalone day-walks. The best day-walks are clustered in the western half (Faralya, Kabak, Patara, Üçağız) where the trail is easier and pensions provide turn-around lunch.

Which is the most-walked single Lycian Way day?

Faralya → Kabak (Stage 2). 10 km, 4–5 hours, mostly downhill, ends at swimming water in Kabak Valley. Walked by ~80% of visitors who do any Lycian Way walking.

How do I get to and from the trailhead by public transport?

Dolmuş (shared minibus) reaches almost every village on the western half. Fethiye otogar runs dolmuş to Ovacık, Faralya, Kabak junction, Patara junction, Kalkan, Kaş — most for £1–3. Pre-booked transfers also exist; see /transfers.

Do I need a guide?

No. The trail is waymarked with red-and-white blazes. Download the official GPX from lycianway.co.uk. Most day walkers complete their stage solo or in pairs. Half-day or full-stage guided walks run €40–100/person; see /guides.

Best month for a Lycian Way day walk?

Mid-April to mid-May, and mid-September to mid-October. Air temperatures in the low 20s°C, wildflowers (April) or autumn light (October). July–August: avoid except very early morning starts on coastal stages — the limestone radiates 50°C+ at noon.

How long are most stages?

10–18 km / 4–7 hours of walking. The shortest is Çıralı → Olympos at ~6 km / 2 hours; the longest is Yediburunlar at ~22 km / 9 hours and is not a day walk for most visitors. Plan to start by 9am even in shoulder season.
