35–40 L pack, trail runners not boots, sun shirt + sun hat, two pairs synthetic socks, fleece + shell, 3 L water capacity, blister kit, no cotton. Pension-night version weighs 8–10 kg loaded.
The Lycian Way is not a wilderness trail. You pass villages most days; pensions on the western half have hot showers, washing, charging. That changes the packing math entirely — most through-hikers carry too much because they imagine a North American long-trail experience. Pack as if you're sleeping indoors most nights with the option to wild-camp 2–3 times east of Finike. Below is the list that emerges from that brief.
The pension-only version (western half: Fethiye → Demre)
The western 250 km of the trail has a pension every 1–2 days. You'll never carry a tent, never carry sleeping kit. The pack is light. Walking days are 5–8 hours; you arrive at a pension by 5pm with hot food cooked on the family stove. This is the format for ~80% of foreign visitors who walk the Lycian Way.
| Item | Weight (g) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pack — 35–40 L | 800–1,100 | Osprey Talon 33, Gregory Nano 36, Deuter Speed Lite 36 are the popular trail-runner-style packs. Avoid heavy-frame backpacks. |
| Trail runners | 650–800 | Salomon Speedcross / La Sportiva Bushido / Hoka Speedgoat / Saucony Peregrine. Wear them, don't pack them. Pack: 1× pair Crocs or sandals for evenings (180 g). |
| Quick-dry shorts | 180 | 1 pair walking + 1 pair lightweight zip-off trousers (240 g) for cooler days. No jeans. |
| Long-sleeve sun shirt | 170 | UPF 50+ technical fabric (Patagonia Sunshade, Outdoor Research Echo). Keeps sunburn off arms; doesn't smell after 4 days. |
| T-shirt (merino) | 160 | For sleeping in. Don't walk in cotton t-shirts; chafes when sweaty. |
| Mid-layer (fleece OR merino) | 280–360 | For evenings + early starts. Even in May, dawn is 8°C in the hills. |
| Packable shell (rain jacket) | 220 | Patagonia Houdini, Marmot PreCip Lite. Spring storms hit fast on the south coast; you don't get drenched, but you also don't go without. |
| Sun hat (wide brim) | 90 | Buff or wide-brim trail hat. The limestone reflects heat. |
| Beanie | 40 | For dawn / evenings shoulder season. Skip in summer. |
| Socks (synthetic) × 2 | 80 | Smartwool Run, Darn Tough Light. Wash one, wear one. |
| Underwear (merino) × 2 | 80 | Wash one, wear one. Merino doesn't smell after a day's wear. |
| Sleep boxers | 40 | One pair just for sleeping in pension beds; keeps walking-day kit cleaner. |
| Gaiters (low cut) | 90 | Stops scree + thorns getting in the trail runners on the rougher stages. |
| Water bladder (2 L) | 160 | Plus 2× 1 L plastic bottles in side pockets. Never run with one source. |
| Water-treatment redundancy | 90 | Steripen Adventurer Opti (UV) + 8× Aquatabs (chemical fallback). Pension water is fine; spring water on the trail occasionally isn't. |
| Head torch + spare batteries | 90 | Black Diamond Spot, Petzl Actik. For the Mt Chimaera evening detour and pre-dawn starts in summer. |
| First aid + blister kit | 220 | 6× Compeed Medium, micropore tape, scissors, ibuprofen × 12, electrolyte sachets × 8, sterile gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers. |
| Phone + 10,000 mAh power bank | 370 | Phone for navigation + photos + emergencies. Power bank charges 2 days of phone use; pensions have outlets but you walk 8h/day. |
| Cables + plug adapter | 90 | Type F (EU) plug. Single USB-C plus a Type-A wall plug. |
| Sunscreen (50 SPF) | 100 | Re-up at any pharmacy in trail villages. Refill the small tube weekly. |
| Toiletries (small) | 200 | Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, deodorant, lip balm. Smaller than you think. |
| Quick-dry travel towel | 150 | Pension towels are old; bring your own. |
| Trekking poles (collapsible) | 280–460 | Black Diamond Distance Z, Leki Micro Trail. The Lycian Way's descents are knee-rough; poles save your IT bands. |
| Documents + cash + cards | 60 | Passport, debit card with no FX fee (Wise, Revolut, Monzo), £200 cash equivalent in lira for pension owners + dolmuş. Photocopy of passport in a separate dry bag. |
| Dry bags (3× small) | 90 | One for electronics, one for clothes, one for medical kit. Cheap insurance against rain or river crossings. |
| Snacks (running buffer) | 300 | Dried figs, dates, peanut butter sachets, energy bars. Replenished at village shops. |
| Total worn + carried (excluding water) | ~6.5–7.5 kg | Add 2–3 kg water = 9–10 kg loaded. Add a pension-bought dinner — light pack, real food. |
The wild-camp version (eastern half: Demre → Geyikbayırı)
East of Demre the pension density drops. There are 2–3 stretches where you'll need to wild-camp or arrange a forward-night transfer back to the previous pension. Below is the additional kit if you take the wild-camp option.
| Add to base list | Weight (g) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tent (1-person, 3-season) | 1,000–1,400 | MSR Hubba NX (1-person), Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1, Tarptent Notch. Free-standing matters because you'll camp on rock as often as soil. |
| Sleeping bag (3-season, 5–10°C) | 600–900 | Down packs smaller, but a damp synthetic still insulates. May/October dawns hit 5–8°C in mountain camps. |
| Sleeping pad (inflatable) | 350–500 | Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite, Sea to Summit UltraLight. Foam pad is acceptable but bulkier. |
| Stove + fuel (canister) | 120 + 220 | Pocket Rocket 2 + 100g canister. Replenish canister at any sporting-goods shop in Antalya before starting. |
| Pot (titanium 600 ml) | 100 | Snow Peak Trek 700, Toaks Light. One pot for everything — coffee in the morning, dinner at night. |
| Spork + lighter | 30 | Light Tribal lighter + plastic spork. Don't bother with cutlery. |
| Additional weight | ~3 kg | Total wild-camp version: 11–13 kg loaded. |
What people commonly OVER-pack
Boots
The single most common error. Trail boots weigh 1.4–1.8 kg per pair vs trail-runner 0.7–0.9 kg. The Lycian Way doesn't justify the weight — most stages are dry, well-drained, and don't have boulder-scrambling that demands ankle support. The exception: if you have chronic ankle weakness or are carrying a 60 L pack with 18 kg of camping gear, boots make sense. Otherwise: trail runners.
Cotton t-shirts / cotton anything
Stays cold when wet; chafes when dry; smells worse than wool after one day. Three or four travelers a year report serious chafe issues from cotton tees on the Yediburunlar exposure. Replace every cotton item with merino or technical fabric.
Heavy DSLR / mirrorless cameras
1.5–2 kg of glass + body + lenses. Phone cameras are now genuinely good enough for everything except the upper-cliff rock-tomb details (where you need a moderate telephoto). If you're not a working photographer, leave the kit at home — your phone + a 20× zoom monocular will cover 95% of the photos worth keeping.
Multi-day food supply
You're never more than a day away from a village shop or pension dinner on the western half. Carrying 5–6 kg of trail food for a 25-day trek is an old American-trail mindset that doesn't apply here. Carry 1 day's snacks + 1 emergency dinner for unexpected delays. Refill at villages.
Hardback guidebook
The Kate Clow guidebook is essential — get the eBook version on your phone. Hardback weighs 700 g; eBook weighs 0 g. Same content.
What people commonly UNDER-pack
Blister kit
Compeed Medium × 6 minimum. Most first-timers bring 1–2 patches. The trail surface is harder on feet than visitors expect; about a third of through-hikers develop a major blister between days 3 and 5.
Electrolyte tablets
Nuun, SIS Go Hydro, or High5 Zero. Eight tabs minimum. Plain water + 35°C noon = electrolyte deficit fast. The single biggest cause of "hit a wall at 3pm" reports.
Spare batteries / second power bank
You will regret a single 10,000 mAh power bank on day 4. Either two power banks OR a 20,000 mAh one. Pension outlets are reliable but you walk 8 hours away from them.
Sun cream
Refill weekly. The 100 ml tube you flew with WILL run out. Pharmacies in Fethiye, Patara, Kaş, Demre all carry SPF 50.
A real medical kit
Beyond Compeed: ibuprofen, paracetamol, electrolytes, Imodium (water-borne stomach issues happen), antihistamine (Mediterranean wasps in late summer), antiseptic wipes, sterile gauze, micropore tape, scissors, tweezers, blister-roof cream. Total weight 220 g. The pharmacy in any trail village stocks the basics; the kit is for the day you're 4 hours from one.
Where to buy / refill in Turkey
Decathlon (best stop)
Antalya has a large Decathlon (the French sports retailer) at the Mall of Antalya. Stocks tents, sleeping bags, gas canisters, trail-runner shoes, all the basics — at 30–50% lower prices than UK/EU. If you're flying into Antalya you can buy your wild-camp kit there, walk the trail, and donate it to the next walker via a pension owner.
Pharmacies
Every trail village (Faralya, Kabak, Patara, Kaş, Demre, Çıralı) has at least one pharmacy. Stock standard: sunscreen, blister patches, ibuprofen, paracetamol, electrolyte tablets, basic first-aid. They do NOT stock specialised trail-running shoes, fancy fabrics, or technical hardware — that's Decathlon or Antalya sporting-goods.
Village shops
Migros / BIM / A101 supermarkets in Fethiye, Patara, Kaş, Demre, Çıralı sell food, batteries, basic toiletries. Prices are 20–40% lower than UK supermarkets. Refill snacks here, not at airport / departure-terminal kiosks.
Frequently asked
How big should my pack be?
35–40 L for pension nights only (the western half — Fethiye to Demre). 50–55 L if you wild-camp on parts of the eastern half. Most through-hikers regret bringing 60+ L — too easy to over-fill. Aim for 8–10 kg loaded; never more than 12 kg.
Boots or trail runners?
Trail runners. The Lycian Way surface is limestone slab + pine-needle path + cobble — drainage and traction terrain, not boulder-scrambling that needs ankle support. Heavy boots overheat in the May–October air (20–35°C). Salomon Speedcross, La Sportiva Bushido, Hoka Speedgoat, Saucony Peregrine are the trail-runner consensus. Two pairs of socks (synthetic for walking, merino for evenings).
How much water should I carry?
3 L minimum on shoulder-season day-walks; 5 L in summer; 6 L on the harder mountain stages. 2 L bladder + 2× 1 L bottle redundancy — bladders fail, bottles are insurance. Pension owners refill them for free. lycianway.co.uk has the seasonal spring-availability map.
Do I need a tent if I'm staying in pensions?
Not on the western half. Faralya, Kabak, Patara, Kaş, Üçağız, Demre all have multiple pensions priced €25–50/night including dinner + breakfast. East of Demre you'll need either a tent + sleeping bag for 2–3 wild-camp nights or pre-arranged transfers back to known accommodation.
What clothing layers do I need?
Spring/autumn: sun hat + long-sleeve sun-shirt (UPF 50+), one pair quick-dry shorts/trousers, fleece or merino mid-layer, packable shell, beanie, two pairs synthetic socks, merino t-shirt for sleeping. Summer: drop the fleece + beanie, double the socks. Avoid cotton everywhere — stays cold when wet, chafes when dry.
What's the single most-forgotten item?
Compeed (or any blister kit). The limestone surface is rolled-ankle, blister-fest combination — about a third of first-time walkers develop blisters by day 3. Pack 6× Compeed Medium, micropore tape, ibuprofen, electrolyte sachets. Also commonly forgotten: a head torch for early-morning starts and Mt Chimaera evening detours.
