When to visit Lycia. The honest month-by-month answer.

There’s a 6-week sweet spot in spring (mid-May → mid-June) and another in autumn (mid-September → early October). Hiking, paragliding, sailing and diving all peak then, prices are 20–30% below summer, and you actually get to swim in 22–25°C sea. Here’s every month, what’s on, and what to skip.

Air Games week (mid-Oct)
Short answer

The two windows worth flying for: late May–mid June, and mid September–early October.

Both give you 28–32°C days, 22–25°C sea, near-100% paragliding flyability, comfortable Lycian Way hiking, dive visibility 25–40 m, and prices roughly 25% below July–August peak. May tends to have the best dive visibility (before the plankton bloom). September feels quieter (schools are back). October’s third week is the Oludeniz Air Games festival — accommodation doubles in price; book early or skip the dates.

Month by month

All temperatures are coastal averages. Inland (Bezirgan plateau, the upper Lycian Way) runs 4–6°C cooler in summer, the same in winter.

January

Quiet
Air:
14°C / 7°C (avg high/low)

Lycian Way is genuinely good — 12–18°C walking weather, wildflowers starting late month. Babadağ flies on roughly 50% of days. Most beach restaurants closed. Hotels in Fethiye 50–60% off.

February

Quiet
Air:
15°C / 7°C

March

Good
Air:
17°C / 8°C
Sea:
16°C
Rain:
~9 days
Open:
Hiking · paragliding · spring blooms

22°C / 11°C
Sea:
17°C
Rain:
~6 days
Open:
Hiking · paragliding · diving · sailing

Everything reopens. Sea still cool (most casual swimmers wait). Hiking is at its absolute peak — green hills, no heat. Babadağ flying ~80% of days. Easter week sees a Turkish-domestic mini-rush; otherwise quiet.

May

Sweet spot
Air:
26°C / 14°C
Sea:
20°C → 22°C
Rain:
~3 days
Open:
All four pillars + retreats

If you can only pick one month: late May. Best dive visibility of the year (40 m+ before plankton). Hiking still cool enough. Sea climbs from 20°C to 22°C through the month. Yoga retreats running. Prices 25% below peak.

June

Sweet spot
Air:
30°C / 18°C
Sea:
23°C → 25°C
Rain:
~1 day
Open:
All four pillars + retreats + gulets

Sea hits Mediterranean-warm. All four pillars at full operation. Inland hiking gets warm by midday — start early. Schools still in session in most of Europe → quieter than July. Last week starts to fill up.

34°C / 22°C
Sea:
26°C
Rain:
0 days (effectively)
Open:

Air:
35°C / 23°C
Sea:
27°C
Rain:
0 days

Everything · everything full

Hottest month. 38°C+ inland is normal. Avoid hiking the inland Lycian Way stages. Sea peaks. Turkish domestic holiday season → coastal towns full of Turkish families (busiest). Highest prices of the year.

September

Sweet spot
Air:
32°C / 19°C
Sea:
26°C
Rain:
~1 day
Open:
All four pillars + retreats

Best month for divers — sea is still summer-warm but visibility is back to 30+ m. Hiking comfortable again. Schools back → families gone, couples take over. Yoga retreat season picks back up. Prices 25% below August.

October (early)

Sweet spot
Air:
27°C / 15°C
Sea:
23°C
Rain:
~3 days
Open:
All four pillars (most operators run until end Oct)

First two weeks of October are arguably the best week-long-trip dates of the entire year. Then comes Air Games week (3rd week) — accommodation 2–3× normal. By end-October the season is winding down.

November

Shoulder
Air:
21°C / 11°C
Sea:
20°C
Rain:
~7 days
Open:
Hiking · paragliding · some diving · no gulets

December

Quiet
Air:
17°C / 9°C
Sea:
17°C
Rain:
~12 days
Open:
Hiking · paragliding (most days)

Wettest month. New Year week sees a small Turkish-domestic spike in Antalya hotels. Babadağ still flies most days. Lycian Way doable but pack waterproofs.

If you can only go in…

The school summer holidays (Jul–Aug)

Heat-shift the whole trip. Mornings outdoors (paragliding, hiking 5–10 am, dive boat 9 am), afternoons in the sea, evenings out. Stay in places with proper shade and AC. Patara, Cıralı and Kabak handle the heat better than inland bases. Book everything 2–3 months ahead.

Easter / spring half term (Apr)

Genuinely good. Wildflowers peak, hiking unmatched, paragliding ~80% flyable, prices off-peak. Sea still cool — bring swim gear but expect to use the hotel pool more than the Mediterranean. Diving water 17°C — wear a thick wetsuit or skip diving this trip.

October half term (week 3 of Oct)

Air Games week — Oludeniz hotels triple in price and book out months ahead. Either fly into the festival (book NOW) or shift trip to first 2 weeks of October instead. Sea still 23°C, hiking great, dive vis perfect. Best time for couples.

Christmas / New Year

Cheap, quiet, hiking-and-history holiday. Sea is 17°C — beach and most gulets are closed. A handful of paragliding companies fly New Year’s Day at Babadağ (small price premium). Lycian Way perfectly walkable with rain layers. Antalya old town as a base.

Things that will surprise you about timing

The Oludeniz Air Games (3rd week of October)

~1,000 pilots from 60 countries fly five days of acrobatic shows, base jumping and night flying off Babadağ. Brilliant if you’re a paragliding enthusiast — extremely expensive and crowded if you’re not. Hotel prices 2–3× normal for that week alone, then drop straight back. Dates released by April each year on oludenizairgames.co.uk.

Ramadan

Lycia is one of the more secular parts of Turkey, but if you visit during Ramadan (dates shift each year — March in 2026, late February in 2027) you’ll find a few inland village restaurants closed during daylight. Coastal tourist towns (Fethiye, Kaş, Olympos) operate as normal. Eid al-Fitr at the end is a 3-day Turkish public holiday — domestic travel surges, plan accordingly.

Turkish school holidays

Mid-June through early September. Coastal towns swell with Turkish families — same dates as European peak, so it’s the busiest period of the year. The September shoulder is particularly quiet because Turkish schools restart on the 1st (earlier than most European countries).

The plankton bloom

Late June into early July, dive visibility drops from 35–40 m to 15–20 m for ~3 weeks as the spring plankton bloom passes. Operators run as normal but photographers should know. By late July visibility recovers.

About the Babadağ flying days percentages: these are 10-year averages — actual flyability depends on wind direction (specifically the north wind, poyraz). Days you can’t fly tend to be runs of 1–3 days, not single scattered days. If you have 4+ days in Oludeniz you’ll almost certainly get flyable conditions even in winter.

So when should YOU book?

If you have full flexibility: third week of May is the single best 7-day window of the year. Diving is at its peak visibility, hiking still cool, sea warm enough to swim, prices off-peak.

If you’re tied to school holidays: October half-term, days 1–14 ONLY (avoid the Air Games week) is the best family option — pleasant temperatures, sea still warm, wider range of accommodation availability than peak summer.

If you’re a serious adventurer: April for the Lycian Way through-hike (cool walking, peak wildflowers), or September for the diving + sailing combination at peak conditions and quiet trails.

Frequently asked

When is the absolute best time to visit Lycia?

Mid-May to mid-June, or mid-September to early October. Both windows give you 28–32°C days, 22–25°C sea, near-100% paragliding flyability, comfortable hiking, low-30s diving water, and prices 20–30% below July–August peak. May tends to have the best visibility for diving (before the plankton bloom). September and October feel quieter — schools are back in.

Is July a bad time to visit Lycia?

Not bad — but hot and full. 33–37°C inland, 28–32°C on the coast, sea around 26°C. Hiking is dawn-only or dusk-only; paragliding pilots prefer mornings; diving is great. Prices are 30–50% above shoulder. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead. If you have school-age kids and no flexibility on dates, July works — just adjust expectations.

Can you visit Lycia in winter?

Yes for hiking and a few year-round operators (Babadağ paragliding flies most winter days, a handful of Kaş dive shops keep going in 5/4 wetsuits or drysuits). Sea is 15–17°C — too cold for casual swimming. Most gulets, eco-camps and beach restaurants close November–March. Hotels in Fethiye and Antalya stay open at 50–70% off summer rates. Good for cultural travelers and budget hikers; not for a beach holiday.

When does the Oludeniz Air Games festival run?

Typically the third week of October — a 5-day festival pulling 1,000+ pilots from 60 countries. Accommodation in Oludeniz doubles or triples in price for that week, books out 2–3 months ahead. If you’re not specifically going for the festival, skip these dates and pick September or early October instead. If you ARE going, book NOW.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in May?

By late May, yes — 21–22°C and rising. Early May the sea is still around 18–19°C which is bracing. By June it’s 22–24°C and Mediterranean-warm. The sea peaks at 26–27°C in August and stays warm enough for comfortable swimming through October.
