Then pre-arrange a private transfer from Dalaman to your resort. Door-to-door, fixed price, someone waiting at arrivals. Skip the overnight bus unless the budget genuinely demands it.
One thing to get right before you book: fly from whichever Istanbul airport your inbound flight lands at — IST and SAW are on opposite sides of a huge city, and crossing town to switch between them can cost you two hours and a missed connection.
First, the thing nobody tells you: Fethiye has no airport
This trips up a lot of first-time visitors. You will not find an "Istanbul to Fethiye" flight, because Fethiye itself has no airport. The gateway for the whole western Lycian coast is Dalaman Airport (DLM), about 50 km west of Fethiye — roughly a 50-minute drive. Every flight, transfer and bus in this guide is really getting you to Dalaman first, then onward by road.
There's one important fork. If you're heading for the eastern Lycian coast — Olympos, Çıralı, or anywhere on the Antalya side — Dalaman is the wrong airport. Fly into Antalya (AYT) instead; it's far closer to that end of the coast. For Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kalkan and Kaş, Dalaman wins every time. Which Istanbul airport — IST or SAW?
Istanbul has two airports, and they're nothing alike:
- Istanbul Airport (IST) — the giant new hub on the European side. This is Turkish Airlines' home and where most long-haul international flights land. Big, modern, and a fair way out of the city.
- Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) — on the Asian side, the low-cost base for Pegasus and AJet. Fares to Dalaman are often cheaper from here.
Both have several daily flights to Dalaman, so the rule is simple: fly out of whichever airport you flew into. IST and SAW sit on opposite shores of the Bosphorus, and crossing the city between them takes 1.5–2+ hours in traffic. If your international flight lands at IST, look for an IST→DLM connection; if you came in to SAW, fly SAW→DLM. Splitting your journey across both airports is the classic way to lose half a day and risk missing a flight.
The clear winner: fly Istanbul → Dalaman
For almost everyone, flying beats every other option. The Istanbul–Dalaman hop is about 1 hour 15 minutes in the air, with multiple departures a day from both airports across Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet. Booked a week or more ahead, one-way fares are typically around €30–80 (prices in Turkish lira swing with the country's high inflation, so we quote ranges; last-minute and peak August fares run higher).
Even counting check-in, security and the transfer at the far end, you'll be on the coast the same day — usually by early afternoon if you take a morning flight. That's the whole case for flying: it turns a journey that takes a night and a day by road into a half-day errand.
Getting from Dalaman airport to the coast
Once you land at Dalaman, the resorts spread out along the coast at different drive times. Here's the rough lay of the land — and the transfer pages with fixed prices for each:
Dalaman → Fethiye
The shortest hop and the hub for the western coast. Easiest by private Dalaman–Fethiye transfer (door-to-door, fixed price) or the airport shuttle to Fethiye otogar.
Dalaman → Ölüdeniz
The famous blue lagoon and Babadağ paragliding launch sit just past Fethiye. A Dalaman–Ölüdeniz transfer drops you right at your hotel, which matters on the steep resort lanes.
Dalaman → Kalkan
Further along the coast road, a scenic run past Kınık and Xanthos. A long, winding drive after a flight — a private transfer is the sane choice with luggage.
Dalaman → Kaş
The far end of the easy-from-Dalaman coast. Still closer to Dalaman than to Antalya. Book a Dalaman–Kaş transfer ahead, as it's a real two-hour-plus journey.
Your three ways from the airport
- Private transfer — door-to-door, fixed price agreed in advance, a driver holding a sign at arrivals. Easily the least stressful with bags, kids, or a late landing. Compare routes on our transfers page.
- Havaş / shuttle bus + dolmuş — the airport bus runs to Fethiye otogar (the bus station) for a few euros; from there cheap dolmuş minibuses fan out to Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü and beyond. Cheapest, but with a change and a wait.
- Rental car — pick up at the airport if you want to roam the coast and the inland Lycian sites under your own steam. Worth it for a touring trip; overkill if you're staying put in one resort.
The overnight bus — cheap, but it costs you a night
Turkey's intercity coaches are genuinely good, and the budget option from Istanbul is the overnight bus. Operators like Pamukkale, Kamil Koç and Metro Turizm run Istanbul → Fethiye otogar in roughly 11–13 hours, leaving in the evening and arriving the next morning, for about €20–35.
The coaches are comfortable enough — reclining seats, on-board steward, regular rest stops — but there's no getting around the maths: you trade a flight that saves ten hours for a night on a bus. It's worth it if your budget is the hard constraint, or if you actively like overland travel. For most people, the modest extra cost of flying is money well spent. And to be clear: there is no train to the Lycian coast, so it's really fly vs bus.
