What to skip on a first two weeks: bolting on Istanbul or Pamukkale as well (that's a different, longer trip — this one is balloons-and-coast). Don't try to "see all the ruins" on the coast either; pick two or three and leave the rest. And don't drive the whole 700 km between the regions to save a flight — it costs you two days you can't spare.
Why these two regions pair so well
Turkey is enormous, and trying to "do it all" in a fortnight is the classic mistake. Cappadocia and Lycia is the rare combination that actually fits, because each delivers a completely different headline experience with very little overlap. Cappadocia is the otherworldly inland: hot-air balloons at sunrise over a valley of fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches, underground cities and cave hotels. The Lycian coast is the opposite — turquoise bays, ancient cities tumbling into the sea, gulet cruises and long beaches.
Two contrasting highlights, one short flight, and a satisfying arc from the dramatic interior to a relaxing finish by the water. That's the whole pitch, and it holds up.
How the two weeks split
The proven division is 3 nights in Cappadocia, 1 travel day, and 9–10 nights on the Lycian coast spread over two (or three) bases. Three nights inland is enough for one balloon flight plus the valleys and an underground city without rushing; the coast then gets the lion's share, which is right, because that's where you'll want slow mornings.

The flight that links them
This is the part people overthink. There's no direct flight between Cappadocia and the Lycian coast, so you route through a hub — almost always Istanbul. The standard connection is:
- Cappadocia airport — Kayseri (ASR) is the bigger one with more flights; Nevşehir (NAV) is closer to Göreme but quieter. Your cave-hotel transfer can serve either.
- → Istanbul (a short domestic hop)
- → Dalaman (DLM) for the western coast (Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kalkan, Kaş), or Antalya (AYT) for the eastern end (Olympos, Çıralı).
It's bookable as one through-ticket and usually eats a half to most of a day with the connection. Driving the ~700 km instead is genuinely scenic but burns two days you don't have on a 14-night trip, so unless road-tripping is the point of your holiday, fly. Day-by-day: the 14-day route
Days 1–4 · Cappadocia
Day 1 — Arrive Cappadocia
Fly into Kayseri or Nevşehir, transfer to Göreme or Uçhisar, and check into a cave hotel. Spend the afternoon easing in — a sunset viewpoint over the valleys, dinner in the village. Confirm your balloon pickup time for the morning.
Day 2 — Balloon + Göreme valleys
The sunrise balloon flight (booked in advance) is the headline. Back on the ground, the Göreme Open-Air Museum's rock-cut churches and a wander through Love Valley or the Rose/Red valleys fill the rest. An easy, high day.
Day 3 — Underground city + Ihlara
Head underground at Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, then walk a stretch of the green Ihlara Valley. Keep this loosely planned — if your balloon was cancelled on Day 2, this morning is your second attempt instead.
Day 4 — Fly to the coast. Morning at leisure (last valley viewpoint, pottery in Avanos), then the connecting flight via Istanbul down to Dalaman. Transfer to Fethiye or Ölüdeniz and check in. You've earned a quiet first evening by the sea.
Days 5–8 · Western Lycian coast (Fethiye base)
Days 5–6 — Fethiye & Ölüdeniz

Day 7 — Saklıkent + Tlos (or a 12-island boat day)

Day 8 — Kayaköy + transfer south. Morning at the haunting Kayaköy ghost town, then a short transfer down the coast to Kaş for the second half. The drive itself, along the cliffs, is part of the trip.
Days 9–13 · Kaş & the eastern reaches
Days 9–10 — Kaş & Kaputaş
Kaş is the laid-back highlight of the coast — a harbour ringed with cafés, Lycian tombs on the hillside, and the dazzling Kaputaş beach a short drive west. This is where you stop ticking boxes. See things to do in Kaş.
Day 11 — Kekova sunken city
A boat or sea-kayak trip out to the Kekova sunken city — Lycian ruins half-submerged off the island, with Simena (Kaleköy) castle above. One of the most memorable days in Lycia.
Day 12 — Diving, or Patara day trip
Kaş is Turkey's best dive town — a try-dive or a couple of fun dives if that appeals (diving in Kaş). Otherwise, drive west to Patara for the 18 km beach and its Lycian capital ruins.
Day 13 — Olympos & the Chimaera (optional reach east), or a final slow beach day. With a hire car you can push east to Çıralı, Olympos and the Chimaera flames — though it's a long day from Kaş, so many people simply keep this as a final unhurried day by the sea. If Olympos really pulls you, the neat alternative is to fly home from Antalya instead and base your last nights there.
Day 14 — Fly home. Transfer back to Dalaman (or Antalya) for the flight out. End-of-trip tip: don't schedule a dawn flight after a late dinner — the coast roads are slow and you'll want the buffer.
Pacing, and where two weeks gets thin
This itinerary is deliberately relaxed, not maximal. You change hotels three times (Cappadocia, Fethiye, Kaş) and take one internal flight — any more moving than that and a holiday starts to feel like logistics. The single biggest pacing trap is trying to add Istanbul or Pamukkale on top: both are wonderful and both deserve their own days, and squeezing them in turns your fortnight into a transit schedule. Save them for next time, or add a third week.

When to go
The sweet spots are late April to early June and September into mid-October. Both give you warm-enough sea on the coast and, just as importantly, the calmest balloon-flying weather in Cappadocia — high summer bakes the interior and winter grounds balloons frequently. Spring brings green valleys and wildflowers; autumn brings the warmest sea for swimming.
