The Ölüdeniz International Air Games
The headline event is the Ölüdeniz International Air Games, an aerial festival held every October over the Blue Lagoon — one of the most spectacular flying venues on earth, with Babadağ rising nearly 2,000 m straight up behind a turquoise lagoon. Pilots come from dozens of countries to launch off the mountain and perform over the bay, and the whole thing is free to watch from Ölüdeniz beach and the promenade.
What you'll see over the festival days:
- Acro paragliding — the stars of the show: pilots throwing loops, spirals and dynamic manoeuvres on small high-performance wings, often trailing smoke, coming down over the lagoon.
- Wingsuit and skydiving displays — flyers tracking across the bay and canopy formations dropping in.
- Hot-air balloons — early-morning and special-shape balloons over the beach.
- Formation and synchro flying — paramotors and paragliders in choreographed sequences, plus aerobatic smoke-trail routines.
- A festival atmosphere — music, a beach crowd, food stalls and evening events alongside the flying.

In the first half of October the sea is still around 24–25°C — genuinely warm for swimming and snorkelling — and the days are reliably sunny in the low-to-mid twenties, cooling pleasantly in the evening. By late October the air softens to the high teens/low twenties, the sea is a touch cooler but still swimmable at around 22–23°C, evenings need a layer, and there's a growing chance of the first autumn rain. The warm-sea, warm-day sweet spot is firmly early-to-mid October.
The catch: the season winds down late in the month
Be realistic about the back end of October. Lycia is a seasonal coast, and as the month closes, some seasonal restaurants, beach businesses and boat trips reduce their hours or shut for the winter, particularly in the smaller, more seasonal spots. The bigger bases — Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Kaş — stay lively longer, but a daily boat trip or a specific beach bar you'd planned on may have wound down. The weather is also less settled late in the month. Swim, snorkel and take a boat trip
The Blue Lagoon, Butterfly Valley and the boat trips out of Fethiye and Ölüdeniz are still running in the first half of the month, on a warm sea and uncrowded beaches. It's arguably the nicest time to do them — summer warmth without the summer queues.
Walk the Lycian Way
